Sicily is a land of deep-rooted traditions, stunning landscapes, and rich artistic heritage. At SicilytoBike, They are passionate about exploring the island’s beauty in a way that is both sustainable and culturally immersive. Their latest collaboration with the talented students of Instituto Artistico G. Bonachia brings these values to life in a spectacular way—transforming modern e-bikes into vibrant works of art inspired by the legendary Carretto Siciliano.

The Legacy of the Carretto Siciliano: Sicily’s Rolling Masterpieces

The Carretto Siciliano is one of Sicily’s most recognizable and cherished symbols. Originating in the early 19th century, these wooden carts were used for transportation, carrying goods and people across the rugged Sicilian terrain. But they were much more than just practical vehicles—they became mobile storytelling canvases, richly adorned with hand-painted mythological scenes, historical events, religious iconography, and folkloric tales.

Each carretto was a reflection of its owner’s heritage and identity, painted by skilled artisans who passed down their craft through generations. The intricate detailing, bright colors, and symbolic figures made these carts an icon of Sicilian folk art, embodying the island’s spirit of resilience and creativity. Today, while they are no longer used for transport, they remain a cherished part of Sicily’s cultural fabric, displayed in museums, festivals, and private collections.

Bringing the Carretto to the Modern Road: E-Bike Artistry

Honoring this historic art form, students from Instituto Artistico G. Bonachia have taken on the challenge of reinterpreting the classic carretto aesthetic in a contemporary way—through the sleek, modern frame of electric bicycles. Over the past months, they have designed and hand-painted five custom e-bikes, each one telling a unique story inspired by Sicilian traditions.

These one-of-a-kind creations will be unveiled and judged this Sunday at the Parco Archeologico di Selinunte, at Baglio Florio, where visitors can vote for their favorite execution. The event not only showcases the students’ remarkable craftsmanship but also highlights the fusion of sustainability, tradition, and modern travel—core values that SicilytoBike embraces in every tour we offer.
